TORONTO — Taya Currie turned the primary feminine participant ever chosen within the Ontario Hockey League Precedence Choice draft Saturday.
The 16-year-old goaltender from Parkhill, Ontario, was chosen within the 14th spherical, 267th total, by the Sarnia Sting.
“It is simply superior,” Currie instructed OHL TV when requested about her response to being drafted. “I generally is a function mannequin for thus many younger women to observe their desires.”
The 5-foot-7 Currie final performed for the Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs Triple-A boys’ under-16 group. She did not play this season due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Requested by OHL TV about how she wished to be seen by Sarnia Sting followers, she mentioned, “Deal with me like a traditional participant. Do not consider it as a lady, that I stand out. I need to be a traditional teammate to all of the boys. I need to be a household with them.”
Manon Rheaume — the one girl to play within the NHL when she suited up in exhibition video games for the Tampa Bay Lightning in 1992 and ’93 — performed one recreation within the Quebec Main Junior Hockey League within the 1991-92 season with the Trois-Rivieres Draveurs. Most not too long ago, Shannon Szabados dressed for a recreation with the Tri-Metropolis Individuals of the Western Hockey League in 2003-04.
Each Rehaume and Szabados congratulated Currie on Saturday on Twitter. Szabados, Canada’s high goaltender on the previous three Olympics, tweeted that she watched Currie being chosen dwell and that she “cannot wait to observe you on the World stage at some point.”
